Action Words Literacy Workshops

Our workshops are entertaining and energetic. We’ve even been told they are inspirational!

We provide a day of practical and motivating workshops, suitable for teachers and teaching assistants, focusing on:

·         The first 45 High Frequency Words and actions

·         Fun activities to get children reading, writing, speaking and listening

·         Teaching strategies which can be applied throughout the curriculum

Session 1

How Action Words works

·         We explain what is happening in the brain as a child learns to read using our visual, auditory and kinaesthetic approach.

How to teach HFW through fun and games

·         We take you through our 7 step approach to reading and spelling key words.

·         We play games designed to make children read, spell and THINK so that you can experience the fun children have when they use Action Words.

Session 2

The power of the phrase

·         Phrases are a much more powerful reading tool than sentences. Phrases are like open ended questions and sentences are like closed questions.

Putting words into context … reading and responding

·         You will be asked to read and respond to HFW phrases using different emotions, settings, and characters.

·         We create phrases through our fast paced games, encouraging creativity and thinking skills.

·         We emphasise the development of vocabulary and knowledge of sentence structure

Linking HFW to phonic work

·         Our activities are designed to bring both of these reading strategies together no matter which phonic scheme you use.

·         We show you how to put the words children are creating phonically into a meaningful context and how to check for comprehension.
